Pelham Laundry, Pelham Art Center
June - July 2020

This exhibition was a collaboration with Sabrina Harrison and Astiney Montiel. Harrison created the hashtag, #ThanksPelham, immediately after George Floyd’s murder, to give voice to her and her peers’ experiences of racism in the town of Pelham. Montiel helped disseminate the testimony widely, and I proposed a physical exhibition to help bring attention to and raise awareness of racism in our predominantly white community. The Laundry was featured in several local news outlets, and resulted in the Village of Pelham passing legislation to create an Arts Council, when we proposed another exhibition on public land. The village demurred when we asked to install the piece, and then spent a year debating the merits, function and structure of a Municipal Arts Council. My application to join the council was rejected.
